Today marks the start of Latinx/Hispanic Heritage Month. From September 15th to October 15th we celebrate the history, contributions, and influence each of these cultures have had in America.⁣ ⁣ Growing up a 5th generation Mexican American I often felt disconnected from my Latin roots. We never took trips to visit family in Mexico, Spanish wasn't spoken in my home, and I felt a fear that we weren't being "Mexican" enough or "American" enough, rather then embracing who I was.⁣ ⁣ It wasn't until my early 20's that I truly began to understand my family's history. My Nana told me when she first started school they weren't allowed to speak Spanish at all, and would be slapped with rulers on their hand if they were caught saying even one word in Spanish.⁣ ⁣ I realized the disconnect from our Latin roots was mostly about survival. My grandparents wanted their children to succeed in America, and at the time it meant learning and speaking English well.⁣ ⁣ As my family generations have grown, we speak English well, but for me, my Spanish is very choppy and I'm often feel self conscious when I try to speak it.⁣ ⁣ It wasn't until I met my husband Eric that I truly felt an encouragement to reconnect with this deeper part of myself that I always felt was missing.⁣ ⁣ His childhood was very different from mine. Spanish was spoken in his home and he would visit Mexico often. He was familiar with his Latin roots and knows where his family comes from.⁣ ⁣ Once we had our daughter we both agreed that it's important for us to teach her not only who she is as a Mexican American, but to also teach her what was slowly lost in my generation, and that's to speak Spanish.⁣ ⁣ My hope is for her to not feel disconnected in who she is, to embrace it a lot sooner then I did, and to have knowledge about her Latin roots.⁣ ⁣ We are starting a new generation where the Spanish language comes back strong, she's able to connect with her family in Mexico, and isn't afraid to be who she is.⁣ ⁣ ¡Vamos a Celebrar!❤️⁣ ⁣ 📷: @lexlisettephotos⁣ ⁣ #Latinxheritagemonth #Hispanicheritagemonth #Latinroots #Mexicanamerican #Latinas #ProudLatina

In the still of the night I write.⁣ Write to ease my mind, write to calm my emotions, write to fulfill my spirit.⁣ Put pen to paper or fingers to a keyboard.⁣ Sometimes I have a goal, a path, an idea of where my pen will flow.⁣ But lately...I just write.⁣ Write about my day, my thoughts, my struggles.⁣ Writing to find me again.⁣ Becoming a Mom has been the most amazing thing to happen in my life, yet I still don't feel like me.⁣ I search for her in the words of my writings, digging deep to find the flow, to find what makes sense.⁣ I know I will find her again soon. ⁣ If I know anything at all is that writing has saved me time and time again.⁣ It's always been for sure, always been consistent, always been what I can turn to.⁣ I will find me, I will heal me.⁣ Because no one else can do it for me.⁣ So I write in the still of the night...seeking, healing, learning to love me again, building what feels like half to become whole.⁣ I can give all the love to everyone else, but most of all I need to give it to me.⁣ I write and will keep writing.
Since becoming a Mom I've learned to understand my own Mom so much more. Who she is as a woman, what her struggles have been, her joys, her dreams. We've had our share of ups and downs, lord knows mother daughter relationships can be complex. But I also think that's what makes them so special. ⁣ ⁣ To know you're Mom is one thing, but to understand who she is as a person is such a gift.⁣ ⁣ Happy Mother's Day to my beautiful Momma. I thank God for blessing me with her. For her support, especially in my times of need, and her unconditional love. I wouldn't be the woman I am today without her strength and love.⁣ ⁣ Love you Momma and thank you for being the best Nani to our little angel.💜🤍⁣ ⁣ And Happy Mother's Day to all of the other Mothers in my life. You all inspire me and I love you so much. Here's to a day to you, may it be filled with love and laughter.💐⁣
